Week 3 and 4 in Review: Traveling and Practicing

 Yeah, seems I am having less time than expected, so while there is a lot to talk about I only have about twenty minutes to write this. I’ll make it brief for a change, I guess. The last two weekends have been rather busy.

Writing:

There was way less writing than I would have liked but it was not surprising with the travel and the practicing for the performance at the end of February. I should buckle down like crazy to reach my January goal but right now I have mostly given up.

Reading:

I finished reading „Elastic Habits“ by Stephen Guise. I did like it but found it about twice as long as necessary. I don’t think I will try his method. I’m sure it has merit but I’m not sure yet. I started reading „Indistractable“ by Nir Eyal. I’m only a few pages in but I’m really liking it so far. I’ve been thinking about the fact that I don’t really need a smartphone to distract myself, I’ve been able to do that just sitting there by myself for decades before the internet and smartphones came along and this is the first book addressing that issue. I’m having high hopes for this.

I’m almost finished with the „Knitting in the City“-series. I’m currently making my way through the book of extra stuff that’s called „Neanderthal seeks extra Yarn“. It’s not as compelling as the full novels but I’m enjoying it nonetheless. Next I’m not sure if I want to dive into the „Fettered“-series by Lila Moon or rather the next Penny Reid-series. Something with beards, I believe.

Exercise:

Well, with traveling to Salzburg there was naturally less exercise but I was okay with that because we walked and walked between 12,000 steps on Saturday and 22,500 steps on Tuesday. I’d say that totally counts as exercise. I went running on Wednesday:

And on Saturday last week. I made those runs pretty easy:

Teaching:

There was less teaching, of course, what with us frolicking around in Austria. The three days I taught last week were totally kicking my ass, though.

Health:

Things continue to be fine. All the walking seems to have done my knees good, oddly enough. I managed not to catch the cold that about two thirds of my students have. The boy was sounding a bit hoarse and stuffed as well.

Other stuff:

Our trip to Salzburg was wonderful. Spending four days in the same room was less stressful than I would have thought. As usual we were traveling well together. We walked everywhere, ate a lot of great food and looked at the landscape and some art. We started our trip with some döner in Munich before stepping on a train. In Salzburg we walked to our bed & breakfast and then went in search of food. We found cutlets:

The potatoes are underneath. The next day the weather was rather gray, wet and cold. My husband had eaten something that didn’t agree with him, most likely the tsatsiki from the day before and some pickled veggies at the same meal. So we were off after a late start, looked at Mozart’s birth place and the house he lived in from the outside and then went up the hill to the museum for modern art.

We had burgers for lunch that day:

After the museum we walked around some more, then bought some sandwiches and beer and spent the evening in our room reading:

The next day was my husband’s actual birthday. We spent most of the day walking around again, this time to the Salzburg castle. We also got some original Mozartkugels, the best I have ever had in my life. We bought sandwiches (and beer) at the supermarket and walked all the way up to the castle. We did look at almost everything, visited two museums and had lunch in a rather damp space in the castle:

Then we met a friend of my husband at his drumming school so he could drive us to Kapuzinerhof  for a rather nice birthday dinner. First we had a glass of prosecco,

then there was mushroom soup:

Followed by venison ragout with red beet gnocchi and roasted Brussel’s sprouts with walnuts:

And a dessert of wild berry and marzipan sorbet:

Sorry, I totally forgot to take a picture of the dessert before eating half of it. There was marvelous dark beer that they brew in house as well. And I learned that they are no longer allowed to serve the beer in steins unless you specifically ask for it because EU law says you need to be able to see if there is enough beer in the glass. Since the stein is opaque you have to trust the restaurant not to underserve you.

We had a great evening, talking and eating and then we took the train back to Salzburg.

The next day was our last day there. We had breakfast, then packed and first walked to the train station to put our backpacks into a locker. Then we turned around and went all the way to the Kapuzinerberg, walked all the way up and all around the defense wall. The paths were mostly mud and I sometimes had a bit of trouble navigating them because I’m unreasonably afraid of slipping and falling but I still made it all the way around.

I didn’t take many photos on the rough parts of the way. We did make it down again eventually and then set out to find a yarn shop. There was one called „Wool and Coffee“ and I hoped that we could have something for lunch there as well. So we walked all the way through Salzburg to the other end, found the yarn shop which is charming and nice but no food. My husband admired a pair of socks and I would have loved to buy the yarn but it doesn’t seem to be available anymore:

It’s all his favorite colors. I decided that I really need some more sock yarn and found some self-striping:

As for the thread cutter, that’s something I’ve been wanting to get for ages. I never did because I own several pairs of scissors totally capable of doing the job without having to spend any money. So I talked about it with my husband and – as expected – he said, „Just get them.“

Okay.

We made our way back to the train station with only fifteen minutes to spare before the next train home so we decided to eat sandwiches again:

These were pretty good, just plain bread, butter and excellent ham. We also had nuts and some more Mozartkugel, this time the inferior ones from the supermarket. I wanted to try several kinds.

We came back home around six and found that the boy hadn’t managed to do the dishes in time. Apparently, he only did the dishes once in those four days. The kitchen did not look all that inviting. But my husband started doing his cooking magic right away and we had some spaghetti and tomato sauce:

The next day was a little hard with re-entry and running and everything that didn’t get done while we were away and extra-teaching. And then I finally started practicing all those percussion instruments for the Santana gig. I watched a lot of videos about how to play Latin percussion instruments, learned how to play guiro and had to realize that more than a decade of not practicing stick technique had left its mark.

I will have to practice every single day for the next month in order to play those small, seemingly easy instruments.

On Friday the boy and I watched the latest episode of Doctor Who and found it much better than the ones before and on Saturday we watched the first episode of the new Picard series. We liked it and are looking forward to seeing more.

I had planned to record the next podcast episode on Saturday but found that I really needed a day off, or rather almost off because there was still a lot to be done and so I recorded the podcast on Sunday just before having rehearsal with the conga player for the Santana thing.

Rehearsal was really nice and smooth. Phew.

Next week:

There will be a lot of practicing with those pesky percussion instruments. I also realized that the other band my husband is playing with might need a background singer. They are doing quite a few Rolling Stones-songs and those always have fabulous singers. So I’ll learn those parts as well.

There will be more writing, I hope, and more strength training (which means more than none, sounds doable). There will be running, and some household stuff. And we are looking into eating less meat, I already read a new cookbook on the weekend. Should have mentioned that under the ‚reading‘-category. It’s called „Vegan Basics“ and looks pretty good.

So. As always a lot of stuff. And I actually stayed up late so I could write this post. Yeah, it did take more than twenty minutes after all.

Week 2 in Review: Practice, travel plans and impending rehearsals

 That was another fast one. It started with a day off because of Epiphany and then went all through, busy and a little stressful at times.

Writing:

The writing went very well at the beginning of the week, I was pretty disciplined for about 2 1/2 days and then I basically stopped writing for the rest of the week. Despite mustering all my willpower and intention. I’m blaming not enough sleep and overwhelm in other areas of my life.

Reading:

I read a lot because that’s how I cope with the overwhelm and exhaustion. I’m still making my way through the „Knitting in the City“-series by Penny Reid. I’m on book 4.5 right now and can’t wait to get back to reading. The non-fiction I planned to work through this month has been sadly neglected.

Exercise:

Exercise went rather well, I went running/walking three times. I’m still finding two minutes of running without a break hard. Which is funny. There was a lot of sun on Monday:IMG 0644

I found running very hard but also satisfying. I think I’ll stay with the short running intervals for a while, I did 2 1/2 minutes on Saturday without realizing it and that felt way too hard, I know, it is slightly ridiculous but I’ll get there eventually.

I also started a new bodyweight training regimen. I started the Nerd Fitness 20-minute hotel workout. On Tuesday I did the warm-up and started the workout and had to stop after 8 1/2 minutes. I have to say that that was at 7.30 in the evening, so I’m okay with that. And I was rather sore the next day. On Thursday I got a little farther in with two sets of exercises. My husband was very confused when I showed up in his room looking for the dumbbells. „But you never use my weights,“ he said. I was nice and didn’t remind him that the 3-kilo weights are actually mine. But yes, I haven’t used them in years.

I also had plans to do yoga on Sunday but that didn’t happen because there was so much other stuff.

Teaching:

Lots of teaching again, one new student taught and another one I will see this week for the first time. I taught electrical guitar for the first time in years and found that I need to change my setup for this. The thing I dislike most about electrical guitar is all the equipment and all the variables. 

Health:

Things are going fine but with all those workouts my knees are starting to act up again. Which means I need to incorporate stretching into my routines again. I can feel my calves tightening up. So that’s the next stop with the fitness routine, stretch after workouts.

I did not get enough sleep, all those romance novels and evening exhaustion meant that I often opted for sitting around eating and reading instead of going to bed. I’d like to be more disciplined about going to bed early again. Which means basically going straight from teaching to lights out on Mondays and Wednesdays and almost straight from one to the other on Tuesdays.

I already have a routine set up in my routines app, now I just need to follow it.

Other stuff:

 With the upcoming performance at the end of February I suddenly realized that I need to practice all the things. I originally planned to start during Christmas break but didn’t. And then it turned out that I needed to play keyboard on „Riders on the Storm“ as well as all kinds of percussion instruments on all the Santana songs we’re doing. Cue complete panic mode.

But. Two days ago I found sheet music for the Doors song. And then I started watching Youtube videos on how to play Guiro and Campana and all of that and now I’m feeling a little better. Especially since I learned yesterday that another keyboarder will play the song after all. I would just have been the backup if he couldn’t stay for the second evening. Phew.

I still will have to practice those songs every day but now it seems doable.

Apart from that I’m all about travel plans. We need to think about what we’ll be doing next weekend when we’re traveling to Salzburg for four days and I started planning our annual trip to my parents and the boy’s trip during Easter break.

 

Next week:

I will practice and write and get enough sleep and buy all the train tickets and bookmark things to see in Salzburg. We have already made plans to meet an old friend of my husband and his wife for dinner on Sunday and know where we will eat on Monday. Come to think of it, we have already spoken about where to get döner kebab on Saturday for lunch but not about our time of departure from home. Since we’ll be taking regional trains we’ll be totally flexible, no reservations needed or anything. Thinking about the food first is totally our thing. Plans for sightseeing mostly involve the plan of ‚walking around some‘ so far.

So there might not be a week in review next week because I have no idea what kind of time I will have and how the wifi will be. You will get a new podcast episode on Friday for sure because that one is all set up already. This is what preparing the podcast looked like on Sunday morning:

Week 1 in Review: It’s a new decade!

I’m still in that weird space where you don’t quite know which day of the week it is or what time. Not for much longer, though, regular teaching will resume tomorrow.

Writing:

There was not a lot of writing over the holidays but at least there was some. I have not written every day but have almost reached the goals I’ve been setting for myself this week. I also keep reminding myself how happy the writing makes me when I do it. I think I’m about two thirds through the next novel, this one might not be overly long. At least I hope so. 

Reading:

I’ve been reading like crazy, found the „Knitting in the City“-series by Penny Reid and have been devouring her pretty long books. I’m currently a quarter in on book three but only bought book 1.5 this morning. Very enjoyable. Somehow I have not been reading as much non-fiction as I had planned. Funny how that goes.

Exercise:

There was running but nothing else. I have big plans of resuming bodyweight training at some point. I haven’t done any in weeks and have lost muscle for sure. After realizing that I can’t run for ten minutes without stopping I have now re-started Couch to 10K. Yeah! I’m up to 2 minutes of running followed by 3 minutes of walking and that gives me my normal ‚running‘ pace. Oops.

Teaching:

 No teaching this week at all for a change. That was a rather nice break. I didn’t realize it at the time but I think there was only one year the whole year that I didn’t teach at least one student. I like teaching but sometimes it’s good to take a break.

Health:

Things are going well. My mother-in-law has had a nasty cold and the boy had a mild one but I have been blessedly cold-free. Yeah for running around outside all the time and washing my hands a lot. IMG 0622

And then I sewed another t-shirt and just in time to wear it to my mother-in-law’s birthday party. Literally. I snipped the last thread ten minutes before heading out. I did take a picture for you, though, and documented my afternoon over on Instagram:

Next week:

I get another day off today and then it’s back into the mines, including two new students. I haven’t planned my week yet but there will be running (and walking), errands and shopping and crochet and the cleaning of the house and I’ll finally start practicing for the thing we’ll be doing at the end of February.

I’m also plotting more sewing. Fun!
