Sunday, September 27: Still no energy and my father’s birthday

September 28, 2020 by Susanne Leave a Comment

At least I managed to turn the day around in the evening.

I did get enough sleep at least but spent most of the day doing nothing much. It was my father’s 80th birthday so I called him in the morning. I had been lucky and his present had arrived just in time and he really likes it. I bought a copy of the book my husband’s cousin wrote about my mother-in-law’s family in WW II and after. The cousin and my mother-in-law spent many days transcribing letters and talking and the cousin even traveled to Poland. The book looks pretty good. There are only ten copies in the whole world and now my father has one of them. The boy drew a card and those two things had to be enough this time.

Since both my parents are not in top form at the moment, my father has trouble walking and my mother is still in bed most of the day with her broken vertebrae, they couldn’t go out and celebrate but my mother managed to order lunch at a nearby restaurant and my aunt went and picked the food up for them.

My husband and I made gnocchi di palate from scratch with homegrown tomatoes and eggplant. We might have had some lambrusco to go with it and it was very yummy:

I also tried helping my husband finding another copy of some improvisations he had recorded in 2001. He has a CD and listened to it once last week but since then the CD has stopped working. I turned on all the old computers in the house and searched through them but couldn’t find anything. I think he recorded the whole thing on a stand-alone recording station that is long gone. There should be backups of the MP3s somewhere but so far we haven’t found any. It’s great, though, that all the old computers are still working. Here is the eMac that is as old as our son:

For some reason the tray of the CD drive was stuck, though, and here is my husband’s 2006 iMac:

The casing is a little bent because a student of mine and I opened it and repaired the optical drive but it’s still working fine and my husband uses it when teaching drums. And then there is the 2010 MacBook Pro that the boy uses at the moment for his physics experiments:

I also have to say that I’m happy I bought a new laptop two years ago, booting these old machines took ages.

I spent most of the afternoon procrastinating and doing two loads of laundry but I finally started writing half an hour before dinner. So, no, I didn’t finish the novel-in-progress yesterday. But I did write for half an hour before dinner and for twenty minutes before getting ready for bed so that has to be enough.

The boy and I watched an episode of ‚Enterprise‘ that was not too bad and I crocheted another square for my blanket. And I practiced Mandarin for more than ten minutes which is a major success. Oh, and I finished „Killing Frost“ but there is a novella at the end of the book that I’m reading right now.

I’m still itchy all over and while the steroids are making things a little better I’m far from well. I’m hoping to have time to make body butter, hand- and face cream and lip balm some time this week because that might help as well.

Today there will be running and teaching and maybe some more writing. And yoga and laundry and such.

Saturday, September 26: Lazy Saturday

September 27, 2020 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I feel as if I have been nothing but lazy all week but my exhaustion levels tell me otherwise. The week was mostly about teaching and re-scheduling students.

I’m also officially stressed out now.

My rash was back and this time it could definitely not be my hair care. Since the boy needed to get his prescription renewed I looked at the dermatologist’s website and found out that they have a regular time slot open for patients with acute problems. So I went there on Friday. Seems the boy’s neurodermatitis comes from me. Surprise! I have steroid cream for me neck and steroid solution for my scalp and a recommendation for skin care stuff that I need to get from the pharmacy. I hope that will do the trick. I have to say being itchy all the time is no fun.

I spent most of Saturday crocheting:

And reading „Killing Frost“ by Seanan McGuire. And watching Morgan Donner make a „rainbow chemise“ which was superb fun.

I did attempt to run but ended up mostly walking in the pouring rain. It was only 7°C/45°F, brr:

My husband started the wood stove and lunch was spaghetti carbonara:

In the evening the boy and I watched a rather dramatic episode of ‚Eternal Love‘. We are now almost halfway through.

Today there will be some laundry, calling my father for his birthday and hopefully one or two productive things beside crochet as well.

Sunday, September 20: Took a day off

September 21, 2020 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I didn’t even write anything in my bullet journal. There was no list, I did not plan the week in advance and I didn’t even spin. I did call my mother on the phone, crocheted a lot and watched the last day of the Tour de France. The boy and I watched an episode of ‚Eternal Love‘. There was lunch:IMG 1736

I did take pictures of the yarn I bought the day before:

And not only did I order the pair of scissors I had admired at the yarn shop I also ordered the whole repair kit with it. I’ve had the same, ugly and small sewing kit ever since I was 14 and suddenly decided that I want something nicer. I really hope that was the right thing to do.

Today there will be running and errands and lots of teaching and then an old friend of my husband will visit us in the evening. We’ll sit outside and freeze I suppose. The boy is staying home from school because he has the sniffles.

Saturday, September 19: Walking around Munich

September 20, 2020 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I spent most of the day walking around Munich with a visiting friend. I wore a mask that was color-coordinated with my outfit:

IMG 1732

I bought some yarn. I ate lunch:

There were people in dirndls and lederhosen everywhere because it would have been the start of Oktoberfest if there was one. We did manage to keep the distance anyway.

I walked and walked and walked:

And then I went home, watched an episode of Enterprise with a promising premise and a disappointing second half (there seems to be a pattern) and went straight to bed. Nobody did any dishes all day and later today everybody will have to use the old plates that no one likes from the back of the cupboard for breakfast.

Today there will mostly be spinning in front of TV because it’s the last day of the Tour.

Friday, September 18: Still feeling as if I don’t have any time at all

September 19, 2020 by Susanne Leave a Comment

It is as if the madness of starting school is especially crazy this year. All three of us feel rather overwhelmed.

But things might be looking up. My husband managed to finish digging that garden bed he worked on all week. It is fascinating how many rocks and roots can be in such a small patch of earth.

My schedule is mostly sorted. I had planned to finally answer all your nice messages about the end of the podcast this weekend but apparently I will be gallivanting around Munich today, so we’ll see how much energy I will have left tomorrow.

I’m hatching a plan for the rest of the year. No idea if that will become real or not.

I’m crocheting in every free minute. I’ll show you a picture tomorrow, I hope.
