Feels like another “two rolled into one”-day

May 9, 2026 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I’m actually not quite sure how I did with regards to sleep, I did go to bed half an hour late, slept so well that I don’t even remember waking up once, and might have slept a tad longer than usual. My smartwatch was sure my „readiness for the day was „great“ and my „sleep fuel rating“ was „premium“. I’m taking it but I don’t really believe it all. (I just spent ten minutes trying to find a video I watched at some point in the last year where a scientist compared several smartwatches with an actual medical sleep study. Well, let’s say the smartwatches were pretty good at telling whether someone was awake or not. Though I have to say mine often thinks I’m sleeping when I’m actually reading in bed.

Aynway, that is the kind of headspace I am currently in, so definitely in need of a day off or two.

Of course I picked up my phone first thing, despite all my good intentions, but I also managed all the morning routine. Still working on the phone-scrolling vs. novel-writing ratio. I’d like to tilt it more towards something creative of my own.

My husband still looked stressed so I stressed him more by talking about what had been stressing him out the day before. (Not recommended.) But my big thing for the day was that I wanted to set the new computer up in the basement and connect it to everything, and also I wanted to exercise, teach all the students and do some cleaning.

I did talk with my husband for quite some time, did the breakfast dishes, then set the computer up. And it works. Phew!

Next up I realized two things: 1) the boy had put the vacuum upstairs because he was expecting a friend to come over and was frantically cleaning and tidying his room, and 2) because his friend would be visiting, our usual Friday evening bodyweight date would have to be moved or canceled.

So I did my exercise before lunch instead. And then I was rather exhausted. Physically exhausted for once which doesn’t happen all that often. I still folded two loads of laundry but that was it.

We ate lunch outside, all three of us together (first time in ages):

a plate with spaghetti aglio e olio and grated parmesan, a glass of water and some Caprese salad on an indigo tablecloth with colorful stripes

My husband’s idea was that we would all eat Caprese salad first with bread and then some plain spaghetti aglio e olio after. Yes, I am aware that it’s not proper to put parmesan on this dish but I don’t care, I like it with cheese. Now, both my husband and the boy were completely sure that I had eaten Caprese with them in the past which seemed weird to me because I really don’t like raw tomatoes. It’s a sensory thing, the seeds are inedible. Once they’re cooked it’s much better. Also the taste of the raw ones is just so – green, brr.

I had about forty minutes between lunch and my first student but for once I did not play a game or read a book, I did the dishes because I knew the boy’s guest would arrive soon and they had planned to use the kitchen table for drawing. The boy was very grateful and then proceeded to schlep another huge pile of dirty plates downstairs.

All day while doing the dishes I had tried to listen to a Brahms violin sonata. I started the day before and was interrupted 90 seconds in. I was also interrupted after lunch three times while listening to a simple 10-minute piece of music. It is rather nice but somehow I missed a bit of the whole musical arc, funny that.

On the other hand that really illustrates how it is possible to find time for things. I didn’t have a ten-minute block of time that worked for me and listening to that piece of music in two days (to be fair that also comes with trying to listen to something in a high-traffic area of the house at a time of day where people are constantly moving around) but I practiced slow breathing and listened to it anyway. Even if the experience was not quite what I had envisioned.

Then there was all the teaching, one student after the other. It felt like a rather long day but that is often the case on Fridays.

Then I finally ate dinner, in the living room this time because the kitchen was still occupied, read a little, started writing this post, and then finally opened Genshin Impact.

Speaking of which, I also spent a not inconsiderable amount of time with a software update on my phone, then I found it had deleted loads of apps, including Genshin, and when I tried reinstalling there wasn’t enough space left. I tried moving stuff around but then had to go without the game on my phone. I’m not playing it on there a lot anyway, but sometimes I like opening it to look stuff up or to do something easy and quick.

First world problems for sure.

And today I will have a day off, hurray!
