And an actual productive Friday despite a huge afternoon slump

August 31, 2024 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I turned the lights out around midnight (cue sad face). I did manage morning pages anyway but decided to push yoga to later. (I did not do yoga, big surprise.)

There was breakfast with my husband and it was nice, I did my usual internet rounds, then my husband talked about wanting to sharpen some knives which sent me searching for the new, shiny knife sharpener I had gotten for my birthday that I had never used, I did the dishes, changed the sheets on my bed and cleaned the house. All in time to still be able to help my husband with homemade pesto and salad:

a plate of linguine with homemade pesto, some mixed salad and a glass of water

I’d say I deserve a gold star.

Then I took a long break, talked with the boy briefly, played silly games and read and such, decided to eat a cookie or two (I had bought two kinds of cookies because we might have a guest on Sunday), stopped myself from devouring the whole package when I felt really stuffed and nauseous and generally sat around thinking to myself that it was really time to do the lunch dishes and start working on publishing tasks.

I did the dishes way late, ate an early dinner and absentmindedly opened my laptop to work on my blurb. And bio. I asked a couple of writer for feedback on the blurb and – ordered covers for the trilogy. I still have to fill out the brief, so far I’ve only paid for them but still, I’m one step closer to publishing.

Then it was time for my monthly coaching session which ran late, I started writing this post and sat down to knit in front of TV with another beer and a few almonds.

I did Duolingo and my foot exercises and went to bed.

Next up: the usual weekend things and starting to do taxes. Yeah!

Pretty good Thursday

August 30, 2024 by Susanne Leave a Comment

There was enough sleep but I still was slow in the morning. Did manage morning pages and yoga, though.

Husband and I had breakfast, then I wrote my blog post, went online a bit, talked to husband, did the dishes, walked to the nearby supermarket and did the grocery shopping, came back, unpacked, helped husband tie some thyme together, unpacked everything, folded a load of laundry and had lunch:

a plate of pasta e fagioli and a glass of water

I would have preferred the chunks of zucchini to be smaller and everything cooked just a tad longer but my husband was completely happy with the meal.

I took a break, the boy showed up but didn’t stay long. I had set myself an alarm because I had planned to work on publishing tasks for an hour. Guess who started doing the dishes a bit late, still had to change the BRITA filter and descale the electric kettle and then kept being interrupted by her husband…

But I could still have had an hour for publishing tasks but I ended up only have twenty minutes or so.

I did work on the blurb in that time, though, and I think I’m happy with it so far, so that’s good.

Then I taught two students, ate dinner, talked briefly with my husband, played silly games and procrastinated starting this post, finally wrote it after all, made a list for tomorrow, did Duolingo and my foot exercises, watched the last episode of „Miss Night and Day“ while eating coated peanuts and drinking a beer and went to bed.

Today there will be cleaning and more publishing tasks and my monthly coaching call.

Hiking and strong beer

August 29, 2024 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I had big plans of all the things I wanted to do before we left at 11 but in the end none of them came to pass. I barely managed to put sunscreen on and pack a bag with water bottles, almonds and a hat.

The boy was almost late, as always, and had to put his sunscreen on on the train.

There was a bit of bad mood because he was so late, my husband got angry and left for the train station without us. Which was no use because I had his ticket on my phone, but well. In the end we arrived with four minutes to spare and then the train was late.

I was a little anxious about the 1-hour hike up the hill to the Andechs monastery, because of my feet I haven’t done any exercise, not even walking for ages. And while the feet were gloriously pain-free for a couple of days while we were visiting my mother, they are now back to the familiar plantar fasciitis pain. I still decided to go because a) I’m much better and b) I don’t want to sit around doing nothing for the rest of my life and c) I’m pretty sure once I do my exercises again the feet will get better. Did I do my exercises the last few days? No, of course not.

It did help that the hike is so familiar. I know all the points where I usually am in crisis. Struggling in the sun in the street where you think the nice shady valley will start any second now? I now know that this goes on for about three times as long as I think it does.

All in all I was very happy with how it went. Yes, I went into crisis several times at the end. My pulse went to 152 at one point when climbing the stairs and that was when I decided to maybe pause a bit. The boy carried my backpack at the end which was also very kind. We all had feared he would have a hard time as well because he is pretty out of shape at the moment but he did better than me.

I did not have an asthma attack even though I was close. Walking through trees next to a stream was cool and pleasant and there weren’t a lot of people around either. Often that path is super crowded and you have to squeeze in between large groups of hikers and the insane cyclists with their electrified mountain bikes.

We had the traditional, somewhat boring food for lunch and the really delicious if way too strong beer:

a beer garden table with two trays, a plate with pork roast and potato salad, two plates with creamed cheese, two huge pretzels and three glass mugs of dark beer

That beer tastes a bit like liquid chocolate. Even the boy had some this time. We only ever get it when we’re there and it does taste much better on tap than when buying the bottles in the supermarket. Also, everything tastes better when you’re hungry after a sweaty hike. And sweaty it was, it was really remarkably hot that day.

We then got Auszogene for dessert:

Auszogene

They were so fresh that the boy had to wait for them to be done and they were still hot.

Then we walked all the way down again which was easier but took the same amount of time.

We went to the train station, saw that we still had 15 minutes before the train, decided to go down to the lake in the meantime and then remembered that my husband had packed his swim trunks. So the boy and I sat down on the grass for a bit while my husband went swimming:

lake Ammersee with a tree and grass in front of it and some silhouetted people

We walked back to the train station in a leisurely fashion, had to wait a couple of minutes for yet another late train that inexplicably was sitting there on the tracks for five minutes before pulling into the station for no apparent reason, then went back home.

Just before we left the train my husband remembered that he had a student at 5 and would be late because 3 minutes is not enough to walk home from the station. Since the student was his nephew I had his phone number and called him. He said, not to worry, that he would just visit my mother-in-law upstairs in the meantime.

As expected that was it for the day, I did eventually do the dishes and sort the recycling and take a shower but it took me all the way until 10 pm. I was even too tired to watch TV and just read for a bit with my hair still wet. After nodding off for the second time in a row I turned the lights out at a very reasonable time.

Today I will do all.the.things!!! Of course.

Wow, I can’t believe how tired and exhauste I was

August 28, 2024 by Susanne Leave a Comment

And sore, both from yoga and walking up and down a hill for an hour. I’m really badly out of shape. No surprise after basically no exercise for more than a year.

I did not set an alarm after going to bed on time but forgot about my medication alarm. But I already told you that. I tackled the dishes and walked to the health food store and everything took way longer than usual. Also, I had to really focus to walk in a straight line.

I decided not to go to the tea shop for the boy’s tea, I think he should do that himself.

When I came back I helped with making lunch again, husband was all over the place, as usual. Lunch was okay, there are some things that could be improved, for sure:

a plate with veggie and potato casserole, another with red beet salad and a glass of water

I talked with my husband, then I talked with the boy a bit and then mostly sat around trying to figure out if I wanted to take the shower before or after teaching. I decided to do it after, did the dishes, ate a very early dinner, did my singing warm-up, looked at the song my student wanted to learn, taught the lesson, sat around for a bit because I was exhausted and played some Merge Mansion, sat myself down in front of TV with a bag of potato chips and a beer, valiantly made myself stop just before the last episode of the current K-drama, waited for the boy to finish his shower and went to bed.

Today I’m feeling better. Now I’ll do the dishes, brush my teeth and pack my bag for our annual hike to the Andechs monastery. I hope I’ll be up to it. I don’t think I’ll do anything else after.

Train shenanigans

August 27, 2024 by Susanne Leave a Comment

Wow. That was a long day!

After turning the lights out at 11.30 I set my alarm at 6. Got up, did yoga, wrote morning pages and had breakfast. I had already gotten a message that the high speed train between Munich and Würzburg would be late. At that point I was still hoping I could make my connection in Würzburg.

Even though the local trains to Munich looked like they were on time I did take an earlier one just to be safe. This turned out to be a good thing, there was apparently a medical emergency on one of the trains on the main tracks through Munich and that made all the trains everywhere late. I still had more than enough time to change at Munich main station.

When I arrived at the platform it was packed. Not a good sign. But I had my reserved seat that was almost at the end of the train. And that part tends to be less full because people without reservations tend to enter the train at the back end instead of walking all the way to the front.

I was 20 minutes late in Würzburg and missed my connection, so I left an hour later than expected. I was getting hungry by now and bought myself a chocolate bar.

My friend met me at the station of the small town she is now living in. She and her husband just moved at the beginning of August. It is very picturesque, there are vineyards all around, old, medieval houses with statues of the Madonna in niches and a very baroque small church.

But first I got a tour of the new apartment. Including the utility closet with everything in neat little plastic bins. I’m a bit jealous of everything being so tidy and clean what with me living in the midst of piles and piles of stuff. But then I could always sort, declutter and clean.

I was a bit afraid of not getting anything to eat but no, my friend made us a salad as a first course:

a plate of Romana salad with dressing and a glass of water

And then there was vegetable lasagna:

a palte of slightly soggy vegetable lasagna

After that we went out to walk the „Terroir F“-path. (Sorry, that website is German only.) I, of course, was both slightly irritated that they called Hercules and Ariadne Greek gods and too blasé to actually read the whole thing. The sight was very beautiful:

landscape with a small town down in a valley between vineyards

Sorry for not taking better pictures, there was so much sun that I could barely see what was on my phone’s screen.

My feet complained very little, regarding.

We walked back the long way, through the nice little town:

medieval town gate

And inside the church:

very baroque altar inside the church, all gilded statues and curly pillars

We went back to my friend’s house and ate cake on the balcony:

a plate of plum streusel, a big white mug with colorful dots full of tea and a glass of water

My friend’s husband came home from work, we talked some more, ate bread, cheese and cold cuts for dinner with some more tea and then it was time to get back again.

The train back to Würzburg was on time. Then I got a message that not only the car that I had my reserved seat in on the train back was out of commission but so was half the train! I already knew that the train would be at least half an hour late. So while on the train to Würzburg (that only took ten minutes and without wifi) I decided to see if I could find a different connection and reserve another seat. I mean, spending 5 € on not having to be on a train where all the passengers try to cram themselves into half the cars was definitely worth it.

It would be close but I could make it. The connecting high speed train was already five minutes late. And it should arrive at the same platform across.

Then the train to Würzburg got delayed as well. I kept refreshing the train app to gauge whether I could make it.

When we arrived at Würzburg I was the first at the door and dashed to the other side. Phew!

The woman sitting in my reserved seat was very surprised because it hadn’t said there was a reservation when she sat down in it. Well, yeah, because I just reserved it 5 minutes ago.

I ended up sitting elsewhere, there was an empty seat nearby, so all was good.

I settled down for some knitting and watching K-drama that I had downloaded onto my tablet.

The train app kept telling me we’d arrive in Munich in 20 minutes. Me changing trains should have brought me home almost an hour earlier, yeah!

But. At one point I looked up from my screen to see we still hadn’t arrived at Nuremberg. There was no way we could make it from Nuremberg to Munich in 20 minutes. It was just that the train app wasn’t showing the delay.

The train ended up 45 minutes late in Munich. By then I really had enough of sitting on trains. This one was not as crowded because most people prefer to arrive before 11 pm at their destination.

I did get on the local train that I had initially thought I’d catch and that one was only 5 minutes late, hurray! And I learned that at the moment because of construction on the main line through Munich (I might have mentioned that here and there) the trains to where I live only run once per hour. So I got extremely lucky that I only had to wait for, like, 10 minutes.

Phew.

I arrived home hungry, thirsty and tired at 11.45. I had worn a mask on all the trains because it was full of people and there was always someone coughing right next to me. Which makes the whole experience more unpleasant and I always forget to drink when wearing a mask.

At home the rest of the family all greeted me, I had kept them updated on the train saga, I had asked the boy to put a beer in the fridge for me, please, and I sat down and ate a second dinner while telling the boy about my day. Then we got talking, about my friend and about people in general and how to prevent getting set in one’s way and then around 1 am we started showing each other music we had liked recently and he showed me all the tweets he had wanted to send me links to throughout the day but he hadn’t because he didn’t want to interrupt.

I went to bed at 2.30. Which might be a little late.

I did not set an alarm because I really need the sleep but – I forgot to disable my regular „take your thyroid meds“-alarm at 7.30. So, um, I’ve been up since then with only 5 hours of sleep. This will be great for sure!

Somehow half the day got away from me

August 26, 2024 by Susanne Leave a Comment

Maybe it was time for my weekly slump.

I did get enough sleep, woke up from the alarm and promptly fell back asleep. Therefore half my brain was offline most of the day. I did do my complete morning routine, had breakfast with my husband, and did my online rounds.

More talk with husband, my weekly phone call with my mother, and then I helped making lunch by chopping all the things and grating cheese. The leftover pork cutlet sparked some pasta with tomato sauce. From freshly picked tomatoes from the backyard:

a plate of penne lisce with tomato sauce, pieces of pork cutlet, grated cheese, spring onions and fried slices of zucchini and eggplant with a glass of water

My gauge swatch was dry, I realized I had forgotten to count the stitches and rows before washing it and also that the needle I used was too big, I need to use a thinner one. No time to do a second gauge swatch. Since the vest will be pretty oversized anyway I’ll just wing it.

The boy showed up as I was just about to finish my lunch break so I sat with him for almost an hour, talking while he ate. Then I started doing the lunch dishes. My husband came into the kitchen while I was doing that four times, three of those times were about something computer-related he needed help with. „Are you still not finished with the dishes?“ Nope. Usually takes about 30 minutes after lunch, sometimes longer.

I ate too much for dinner and then procrastinated like crazy before finally doing all the things on my list that were left. I packed my bag for today, cast on for the sweater and planned the week. I also got a message that my return train to Munich tonight will arrive half an hour later than expected. At 11 pm instead of 10.30. So I’ll be back home at midnight. That will certainly be lots of fun.

I started writing this post, charged all the devices, took a shower, watched a bit of K-drama and went to bed.

I’m tired already. And I can also tell that I’ll spend tomorrow in a half-comatose state.
