Trojan Horse

October 22, 2006 by Susanne 18 Comments

This is one of those stories that I’m hesitating to tell because I’m afraid of being accused of bragging. My almost 4-year-old built this:

Then my husband said, “This looks like the Trojan Horse.” (Well, actually like the Tojan horse with its foal.) We didn’t quite remember the story of the Trojan Horse, so of course we looked it up. Then, because that’s the way those things go in our house, my husband fetched his copy of the Ilias. In German though, not Greek, we don’t go overboard with this. My husband began reading a passage out loud and our son said, “And what happened next?” … “And what happened next?” … “And what happened next?”

Storytelling time (and before breakfast as you can see by my husband attire).

And then the Greek made war with Troja. And the Trojans didn’t want the Greeks to come into their city. Then the Greek built a big wooden horse. The Trojans took the horse into their city and then the Greek opened the gates from within.

“And what did Helena do then?”

Does anybody know the answer?

Beautiful, beautiful Helen? I don’t really remember her personal back story. That said, it is amazing what a 4 year old can do! Mine actually shared with his baby sister today. WE have miracles going on here!

I can’t remember either. It’s sad how much of my education I’ve already forgotten. Hopefully I’ll re-learn a lot while helping the kids with their homework. Although, they already seem able to outsmart me!

As far as I’m concerned, everyone gets a free pass once in a while to share the things their children do without it being “bragging” or competition. We wouldn’t hesitate to complain or seek advice if we were having a difficult time, would we? Everyone is in some way remarkable, and I am all for celebrating humanity. We have too many negative things to deal with.

Well, I’m obviously in a melancholy mood, so I won’t take up any more of your space.

I’m trying to figure out how your husband’s clothes are supposed to tell us that it is before breakfast. I mean, he has pants and a shirt on. In our home that means he’s ready for a night on the town.

    Your son is sharp.

English isn’t your first language? You write goodly!

Thanks for all the nice comments. I looked up Helena myself and wrote a post about her. (So we all may feel enlightened.)

No, English isn’t my first language. But I started learning it by myself even before I had it in school and then had nine years of English in school. By the age of 18 I started reading novels in English and since then (and because Germany is very Americanized these days) have been reading more novels in English than German. All Germans listen to American music, are eating McDonalds hamburgers, are watching American TV and films and reading American books. I’ve caught myself thinking in English and speaking English when I couldn’t quite find the exact word in German.

But still I have this very German urge to start every post with: “Please, excuse my English.” I have been resisting though.

Aren’t you clever for finding out the origin of that award. That proves that you groove. (Trying to steer the rock in a jazzier direction.)

    Thank you, thank you!

Guess how I came to your blog? Trying to find the link to the origin of the Rockin’ Girl Blogger award! Going from blog to blog to blog to blog, reading none, just doing quick searches.
Thanks so much for bothering to do the hard work!
(It’s almost 1 am where I am, so will be reading your blog later. hehe.)
