Yeah, things are a lot – as always

October 6, 2023 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I’m doing very well, I’m only a bit tired all the time despite going to bed earlier. Or maybe because going to bed earlier, no idea, will see.

I had another full day, did what is now becoming my usual extended morning routine including blogging and novel revision, then dishes and such, rode my bike to the supermarket, went to two shops to get everything we need (turns out it was not everything we needed, I will have to go out again for mint tea and parmesan today), came back a little late for lunch but lunch wasn’t ready yet:

I still didn’t have enough time to put all the groceries away. The boy actually showed up for lunch and we ended up talking afterwards which was nice but also the only break I had all day.

I taught my usual students plus a potential new one. I was so out of it that I didn’t even know her name without looking it up while she was right there but they still decided to start lessons next week. Because one of my students was fifteen minutes late I also managed to make a new student list for the upcoming year which was good and print out two contracts.

I had had vague hopes of doing bodyweight training in the evening but was way too tired. I had started changing the BRITA filter and de-calcifying the water kettle after lunch but then had to hang up some laundry which meant after teaching I came back to unpacked groceries and a water filter that was clean but otherwise untouched. I could not jump right into that, though, because my husband was busy making another red beet salad. On the upside he also was busy doing all the dishes so I won’t complain.

I finally realized why Thursdays are often extra hectic for me: apart from the supermarket run that takes more than an hour and is pretty stressful on its own Thursday is also the day where my husband only has two students and doesn’t start before four. So that’s the day where he always cooks extra elaborate meals and starts all the loads of laundry.

Good to know.

So I watched another episode of „Storm Eye“ first, did Chinese while almost falling asleep over it, then took care of the groceries and water filter and still managed to turn the lights out at 10.30.

This morning I woke up at 6 and was wide awake. Since then I’ve been yawning constantly.

I’m looking forward to all the cleaning, changing the sheets, walking to the health food store, only teaching three students and in between watch another 90-minute Zoom call. Fun!

And another productive day

October 5, 2023 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I’m very happy but part of me is afraid of crashing.

On the other hand, as long as I do get enough sleep and rest being productive and getting stuff done should be good.

As I said, I only got part of my morning routine in. The plan was to do yoga some time in the morning but in the end I did ten minutes right before going to bed. Which is fine.

I did the blogging, novel revision, dirty dishes and chores round, then got on my bike for cardio.IMG 6013

I came back and really wanted to do my stretching but my husband had another cooking emergency. He had spent the whole morning trimming part of the hedge so I get it. I helped him cooking, took a quick shower and we had very nice pumpkin risotto for lunch:

picture of a plate of pumpkin risotto the rice yellow with saffron

After that the boy showed up right when I was about to do the dishes. He did postpone his meal and helped me with the washing up while we were talking.

Then it was all teaching all afternoon and after that I went on a Zoom call organized by Jessica Abel. I was not the most attentive I have to say.

Then dinner, more talking with the boy who had just made a Bluesky account but mostly wanted to talk about one of his videos. I’m sorry but I don’t recall the name, something horror with zombies? I think it was „Dead by Dawn“. Definitely not something for me. Shudder.

I did all my usual evening things but had to cut Chinese short because I was just too tired, did my ten minutes of yoga, planned today and went to bed at 10.30. Phew.

Today I want to do all the things again, including a supermarket run and maybe bodyweight training. We’ll see how that goes.

Oh, and I got a message yesterday from my web hosting service that they had to restart the server because of problems. I had been wondering why this blog was down so much. So I hope that issue is resolved now.

Yeah for productivity! And strength training!

October 4, 2023 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I had a really good day yesterday. I managed the whole morning routine (morning pages, yoga and meditation) before breakfast, ordered yet more acrylic yarn for yet another colorful crochet blanket, went through half a dozen notebooks to figure out which shawl I have made for my mother because she told me it needs mending and I want to see if I still have some of the handspun yarn I used.

I have been wanting to get back to bodyweight training for a long time but couldn’t quite get myself to do it. At one point I was a little disappointed with the routine I had been doing and the boy stopped training with me and I had way more students and less time and so I just – didn’t. Now, strength training is one of the best things you can do for your body. I am watching my osteoporosis-ridden mother and my increasingly frail mother-in-law and it is clear that if they had more strength and would train for it their lives would be much easier. I don’t want to end up as someone who has to think about whether taking an umbrella or a couple more keys will make her purse too heavy.

So I just went for it. I made things easy for myself and just opened the app that I used to use and did the easier version. It has some push and some pull exercises, some version of squats and something called Romanian deadlifts that has you leaning forward while standing on one leg. Something the boy always found really hard but I never did. (On the other hand don’t talk to me about pushups. I never got strong enough to do even one regular pushup, never mind chin-ups.)

The exercises were super hard but I prevailed and today I am completely sore everywhere. I did do some extra stretching afterwards because my feet started complaining again.

There was delicious pasta for lunch:

IMG 6012

There was provolone cheese in there. I was a bit nervous about eating that because I have been avoiding histamine. I did have a stomach ache later in the day but other than that it seems to have been okay.

Right now I’m experimenting with food again. I’m thinking that most fructose doesn’t seem to be the problem after all but histamine. It is a bear to avoid, no mature cheese, no red wine, nothing smoked, no pickles and only very few spices but I am feeling much better and I can eat fruit and veggies again.

After lunch I did the dishes right away, then went to my studio to participate in a write-in on YouTube. After that was finished I kept sitting there revising some more, then had dinner, played some silly iPad games, talked to the boy for an hour because he needs to choose which flavor of physics he wants to specialize in and right now the answer is „most of them“, did my Chinese practice, watched an episode of „Storm Eye“ (a very good one), got ready for bed and turned the lights out after 11.

One of these days I will manage to go to bed before 11. I’m working on it.

Today there will be the usual Wednesday things plus the yoga I didn’t manage to do this morning. The sun us shining and I’m hoping to have another productive day ahead.

Slightly weird day

October 3, 2023 by Susanne Leave a Comment

But then I always have a lot of those, don’t I?

I overslept and ditched my morning routine yesterday but I did blog as you know.

Since I was all sleepy and tired all day I was slow and sluggish and didn’t get much done. I did walk to the health food store thinking how my feet are much better already. I have been having trouble with plantar fasciitis since May or so, got orthotic inserts a few weeks ago and that and staying off my feet seems to make things better.

Came back home to find husband stressed, he had trimmed the front-facing part of the hedge and needed to start cooking but the whole sidewalk was still full of bits of hedge. So I unpacked the groceries and then went out to clean the sidewalk. Which took about 45 minutes. I could really have used the boy’s help but he was still sleeping at that point.

Then there was lunch:

Dal

After that I just sat around doing nothing for too long until I decided it was too late for both doing the dishes and taking a shower but instead I wrote some admin emails and started on planning the month and the week.

Of my six students two canceled, one forgot and called me over Skype 18 minutes after her lesson would have started. So I did finish all that planning and setting up my bullet journal and printing out new business cards for my husband.

I’m trying to do one thing every day that has been sitting around for a while and the business cards were the thing for yesterday.

After finishing teaching I finished setting up the bujo, ate dinner, played silly games for too long, washed the dishes, took a shower, watched an episode of „Storm Eye“ (still watching mostly Chinese TV), did the daily Chinese things, and got to bed at 11.15, only fifteen minutes late.

Today is the holiday, so no teaching. I already ordered yarn and am planning to open the manuscript and spend some serious time revising. I hope I’ll finally get around to that.

I think I might try Blogtober this year?

October 2, 2023 by Susanne 4 Comments

Well, I’ve been idly wondering if I should get back to blogging. But, well, it is a bit of a time commitment. On the other hand I am spending a lot of my time with things like scrolling through social media so I don’t know. And it’s always good to remember that time is flexible.

The thought of explaining everything that happened since my last post was also very intimidating. So I won’t. Not in one big post at least.

So yesterday I didn’t do much but I did do my usual Chinese and I did all the 2022 taxes so I count it as a win. Went to bed at midnight so I’m really, really tired today.

picture of a dark kitchen table with a plate of lasagna, a glass of water and a glass bowl of red beet salad

Because pictures are important I am adding one of yesterday’s lunch, homemade lasagna (we did not make the pasta. I did get a pasta machine in the meantime but well, yesterday making all the sauces and such was time-consuming enough.

So let’s see where this goes!
