Felt like a meandering day but probably wasn’t

January 18, 2025 by Susanne Leave a Comment

Let’s see, I had one of those morning where I am rather slow, I started writing morning pages but then wandered off into the internets. I opened the laptop to write, turned away in disgust and then forced myself to do yoga.

I told myself I’d write later but that never works. Unless. When I told my husband I’d write later he was miffed because that threw all his plans for the morning and then he said, you won’t write anyway because you never do if you don’t do it first thing.

Which is true. Unless I get challenged.

So the writing happened.

The boy had told me to wake him up at 9.30 via text at midnight which I found puzzling because that important lecture where the prof doesn’t allow anything digital at all started at 10. And it takes more than an hour to get to campus.

Well, turned out he had read his calendar wrong and was very upset about missing that lecture. I should have gone upstairs and ask him at 7.30 but since he specifically told me to…

The original plan for the morning had been to walk to the supermarket together but then we realized that two packages were expected that day and since one of them is that frame for the boy’s bed we decided one of us should be home at all times.

So I walked to that supermarket alone. It was too slippery for biking, I thought. And yes, I slipped and almost fell on the way there but fortunately I was able to grab onto a handy wood fence and catch myself. Let’s just say those shoes are not really the best for ice and snow and I have ordered new ones since then.

Walking to the grocery store includes carrying everything back home, a heavy backpack and two big bags. I am experimenting with compression gloves for my poor arthritic fingers and I think they make a difference to the better. I guess I’ll see.

I walked all the way back, unpacked the groceries and ate the food that my husband had kept warm and reheated several times:

tuna steak, fried potatoes, peas and carrots on a white plate and a glass of water

That is tuna even though it doesn’t look like it. My husband was experimenting with a new recipe and it was rather good.

Then I took a break and ate too much chocolate, taught four students, sent the boy the wrong time for bodyweight training so he showed up an hour early, corrected the time and said I was sorry, finished teaching, changed into sweats and did said bodyweight training with him.

Interrupted by him showing me his new computer and how brilliant ‚Space Marine 2‘ looks now and how fast it loads. We also talked about something uni-related.

I finally ate dinner at 8.30, hung around for too long, watched most of one episode of C-drama while inhaling another brick of chocolate and crocheting and went to bed at a reasonable time.

Today looks pretty full as well but, hey, no teaching!

The power of a crammed schedule

January 17, 2025 by Susanne Leave a Comment

Also, my doctor has a weird sense of humor.

I woke up at six, all set on actually doing the full morning routine for once and – ran into the boy. We talked briefly, he was about to go to bed and had made huge progress building his new computer.

Then I went on to write morning pages, move the new story forward, do yoga for the first time in ages and actually also meditate for a bit. My husband came over to start the fire in the wood stove early, around 7.30 but was all quiet in the next room. Very cozy.

You see, the reason I was so good at not wasting too much time that morning was my doctor’s appointment at 9.45. I got out the door only a few minutes late and barely had to wait at the doctor’s office before telling him about my dizzy spells. Since I don’t know when exactly they started and the occur in all kinds of situations he was not hopeful we could find a specific cause or do anything about it. Nevertheless I got referrals to there more doctors, an ENT, a cardiologist and a neurologist. My doctor also told me it wasn’t likely to be something serious because if it was it would have showed earlier and I probably wouldn’t be alive anymore by now.

That got me in a weirdly good mood and made me rather hopeful.

I walked back home by way of the ENT office, the shop where I buy yogurt and the health food store for chocolate.

I met with my husband who had been busy starting another load of laundry and doing the dishes. I told him about the appointment, finished the tea I had to abandon earlier and started making more doctor’s appointments. After that my husband and I sat down to talk about my novel and what I need before publishing. We also had planned to walk through the house and talk about things that need doing but we ran out of time.

We walked over to the Greek restaurant where we shared an appetizer:

fried zucchini with tsatsiki

And then went on to eat our main course:

kritharaki for me with an alcohol-free beer and liver with fries for my husband

We went back home in time for an online meeting with an author friend. My husband also offered to pick up my new orthotics.

The meeting went well and was a lot of fun. We talked about many, many things and the 45 minutes were over way too soon.

I taught a student, had a break because the second student had canceled because they weren’t feeling well, then I wrote some texts and emails and corrected all the typos my husband found in the story I want to use as a reader magnet and then I taught two more students.

The last student of the day had canceled as well so I was off at a reasonable time. I started reading a new book while eating dinner, played silly iPad games for almost an hour, started writing this post and did Duolingo, then made myself a cup of tea, did my foot exercises and watched some C-drama.

For some reason not only are my legs sore as hell, which is weird because the only exercise I changed was the pulling one, but my right leg also hurts for unknown reasons.

Today will be grocery shopping and quite a bit of teaching, then the weekend.

Waiting for the chimney sweep

January 16, 2025 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I overslept a little, wrote morning pages, skipped the rest of the routine and then spent most of the morning waiting for the chimney sweep. He was supposed to show up between 9 and 11 and came smack in the middle at 10.

I had one of those super paralyzed mornings until my husband reminded me to take a walk. Which helped. And I managed to take a shower before lunch:

That is chicken breast with rice and black beans.

After that it was all teaching all afternoon. Just before we finally got the new glass teapot I had ordered. Or so I thought. After unwrapping the formless blob of bubble wrap and pieces of cardboard it turned out that the package from Romania contained – the wrong glass pot that was way too big.

Thanks to Amazon I got a refund and didn’t even have to figure out how to repack the whole thing. On the other hand I am now the proud owner of a huge glass pot that I don’t need.

I ordered a replacement from elsewhere because that Romanian seller was the only one offering it on Amazon and judging by the reviews I wasn’t the only one having problems with them. I mean, mistakes can happen but there were a lot of bad reviews.

After teaching I helped the boy with an email to a professor, then we did bodyweight training. I was still sore all over from Monday, unfortunately.

Then I finally ate dinner, talked with both the boy and my husband, sat there playing solitaire while eating chocolate for too long, then started writing this post while helping the boy with another email (the professor had already answered), made myself a cup of tea and then I should have gone to bed but I watched some C-drama instead.

And now I’ll talk to my doctor about dizzy spells. Fun for everyone involved for sure!

Still yawning all day

January 15, 2025 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I did get enough sleep, though…

Again I wrote morning pages and new fiction words (not a lot of those) but skipped yoga and meditation. This time my excuse was that it was freezing.

Husband and I ate breakfast, I crocheted a bit (the blanket is growing very, very slowly) and we talked and then I was super slow yet again.

I woke the boy up just as his alarm was going off, then I walked to the health food store and bought some food, came back and we had potatoes and kale:

potatoes, kale, bacon and kaminwurzen

After that I talked with the boy until it was time to teach.

The teaching day was a little lighter than usual, I had two students cancel and one tried a lesson with my husband. They have been with me for ages and should be ready for some more advanced guitar lessons.

I made good use of all that free time and ordered replacement drawer rails, a new pillow for my husband’s bed, a new slatted frame for the boy’s bed and sent my husband a link to a site that sells futons so he can choose a new one. I also decided to try some weight lifting gloves.

Because of the cancellations I could eat dinner before my last student.

After I talked with the boy some more who had just gotten home from uni, then I started writing this post, did Duolingo, made a list for today, did my foot exercises, watched an episode of C-drama while spinning and crocheting and went to bed.

Today is the day the chimney sweep is supposed to show up and there will be lots and lots of students.

Always fun to start a week overtired

January 14, 2025 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I did manage morning pages and some fiction writing but not much else yesterday morning. To be fair, even my husband has already reached a point where he was asking about the next school break which is completely unusual.

I did not plan the week (again) but I did write two important and urgent emails, one to a student and one to my webhosting service. I tried switching hosting plans weeks ago for my author website and nothing has happened yet. I need to change plans to be able to use an SSL-certificate…

I had plans to take a walk and a shower before lunch but that never quite happened.

My husband left shortly after 11 for a dental cleaning that took 1 1/2 hours. When he came back he was exhausted and told me he’ll have to have dental work done over the next two years. Yeah?

I had woken the boy up two or three times in the late morning and he did leave the house at one point, only to miss his train and come back defeated. He then went back to bed, planning to eat lunch with us but that didn’t happen either. In other news his new PC is coming along nicely.

Meanwhile I tried to remember how to do dishes and got started on pretzels for lunch:

soft pretzels, white sausage and sweet mustard with a stein of alcohol-free beer

Lunch was a bit late but not too much.

My husband had started a load of laundry and we both started teaching. I had a one-hour break between students and had planned to do some proofreading then but ended up folding laundry and hanging the new load up and talking with the rest of the family instead.

After teaching I went upstairs to the boy’s lair to use the new pull-up bar with the brand-new resistance band. The plan was to use the band with the bar because both the boy and I are not strong enough yet to actually do a pull-up.

Well, turns out we’re not strong enough for assisted pull-ups either. And I’m pretty much unable to actually get myself into said band as well. Ahem. So we started with the very first step of learning pull-ups: hanging from the bar for a couple of seconds.

I did 3 sets of 3 reps of hanging for 5 seconds and let me tell you, my shoulder muscles are very sore today. I also wanted to try wearing my compression gloves for training but forgot until I was downstairs again. I can tell you that doing push exercises with the gloves feels much better, though.

I’ve been trying to research strength training with fingers arthritis but haven’t been able to find a lot. I might have to look into tips for rock-climbing instead. Turns out the demographic that has arthritis in their hands doesn’t seem to do a lot of pull-ups and pushups. Weird.

After that we finally ate dinner. I had big plans to start this post and watch TV, spin and crochet but instead I just had a cup of tea in bed while reading and went to bed early.

And now I’m late again today but well, nothing I can do about it right now.

Still slightly out of sorts

January 13, 2025 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I did get enough sleep and felt like a veritable zombie all day. Until I was super awake in the evening. So I’ll keep trying, I guess.

I did write my morning pages but the rest of the morning routine just fell to the wayside – again.

I had a slow morning, not getting much done, called my mother on the phone and we had an easy and quick lunch:

After that time just happened to pass. The boy was excited and a bit scared about putting his new computer together, I actually managed to open the manuscript and write a bit in the afternoon and then I tried new eye shadow that I had bought weeks (months?) ago:

I know it doesn’t look like much but that’s kind of the point. My concealer wasn’t working and I actually ordered new on until I realized that there was more concealer in the drawer, just something I never used before. I also want to experiment with brown eyeliner and/or contouring with dark brown eyeshadow but this is okay for a first try and doesn’t look like I’ve painted a whole different face on. It also only took about ten minutes if that. And yes, I’m aware that shows. I need makeup that fits into my life, not something I have to free an afternoon for.

The reason I even thought about makeup that evening was that my mother-in-law had invited the three of us, her sister and the sister’s daughter for dinner at the nearby Asian restaurant.

There were appetizers:

This is prawns in potato net for me and spring rolls for the boy. I opted for alcohol-free beer that night as did my husband. I kept with the theme of prawns for my main course as well, here is Pad Thai:

It was all very good even if the noodles were a somewhat overcooked.

We got back home at a reasonable time so I sat down and watched some C-drama while crocheting and drinking a beer. Which turned out to not be the best decision I could make but then I knew that beforehand.

And now another week.
