Starting the school year slightly over-busy

September 10, 2024 by Susanne Leave a Comment

And I’m pressed for time again, writing this whole post in the morning. I usually try to at least start it the night before.

The morning was already shaping up to be a little hectic the night before. I still tried to get my morning routine in but just managed two morning pages before giving up. I took my shower in the annex because there was this black, foul-smelling puddle in the bathtub from the clogged drain.

a white bathtub filled halfway with black, stinking water with a white plunger swimming in it

Which then managed to confuse my husband profoundly, he had forgotten that the boy told him he was taking a shower in the annex bathroom because the other one was clogged the night before, then woke up to that same shower being wet and not properly wiped down again.

Meanwhile I had a hurried breakfast because I had to leave early for my gynecologist appointment. Husband and I did meet briefly, also I had written him a note saying to please not use the kitchen sink or the bathtub (thought the bathtub was pretty much self-explanatory at this point) and to maybe call the plumber to deal with it because this did not look like we could clear it up ourselves.

Then I left with my hair still wet.

The doctor visit went well, just my annual cancer check-up and renewing my prescription. I did forget to ask him about bone density testing. I’m a bit young for it but since my mother has such severe osteoporosis I might want to get it checked earlier.

After that I went to a different doctor to get another prescription renewed, went to the nice health food store in that town to mostly get frozen ground beef (because the one I usually go to doesn’t seem to carry that anymore at all), went to the shop where I get our yogurt, to the pharmacy and back home.

Where my husband greeted me, still out of sorts. He had tried declogging the drain and had failed (no surprised there) and had gotten the number of an emergency plumber who does just this kind of thing from his mother who had then called them. They were supposed to arrive the same morning.

We discussed his plans for lunch which made me turn around right away and walk to the health food store in town to get more groceries.

I came back, unpacked the groceries and went to make myself a pot of chamomile tea. Without using the kitchen sink but fortunately we have a small kitchen unit in the annex as well.

The plumber arrived and was very nice, we had to clear out everything under the kitchen sink because it turned out he had to access the blockage from above. Which explains why none of us had been able to get the plumber’s snake in from the bathtub drain.

It didn’t take him long to clear the drain all up, phew. No idea what this will cost, we’ll get a bill eventually.

That left us with an extremely dirty bathtub and the also very dirty cabinet under the kitchen sink. We haven’t cleaned that cabinet out in years and it shows. So I got a box from the garage, put all the things that belong under the kitchen sink in it and planned to clean the whole thing some time later. (Some time later should be today, I hope.)

There was lunch, only a little late:

a plate of rice, red beans, fried ground beef and fried zucchini and a glass of water

Then I completely deflated. I didn’t manage to do much at all until it was time to teach.

Most of my students had already canceled, mostly because the first day of school is just today but I had a new student coming in and someone who switched from regular lessons every week to just once a month or so. I had scheduled the old student for 4.30 and the new one for 5. At around 4.30 the heavens opened and it started raining like crazy. (By the way, it also rained all morning while I was out and about.)

The new student and her mother arrived at 4.30. Oops. But the other student didn’t, so I thought he had forgotten about it because he is usually very early.

Well. He hadn’t, he just walked instead of going by bike because of the rain and had miscalculated.

Since my husband was free at that time he was kind enough to just teach the old guitar student, the two have known each other for years, so phew.

First lesson went well, then I sat down to write all the emails and texts about scheduling for the other new students and tell everybody who was interested in lessons that I still have no idea if I have slots open and that we could maybe schedule a tryout lesson at the end of the month.

Very happy with finally having done most of my admin tasks next up I had two more messages on voice mail asking for lessons. It’s a bit crazy.

The I taught my last student of the day, had dinner and fell into a bad, bad slump. All that emotional up and down had taken its toll. Also the errands and such.

I did not write my blog post or do anything else, my husband had done the dishes while I was teaching only to experience that familiar-to-me frustration when the boy came downstairs with a big stack of dirty dishes right after.

The boy and I talked a bit, he was very excited about a new video game that he wanted to start playing right away (and wasn’t sure if his computer could handle it), I watched an episode of C-drama and went to bed a little too late.

Today I want to do all the things again, also admin and cleaning the kitchen cabinet and bathtub, teaching all the students and do bodyweight training in the evening.

Oh, and the doctor’s office called me, my vitamin D is too low. No surprise there. Maybe taking that will give me a bit of my oomph back.
