And another packed day

June 6, 2024 by Susanne Leave a Comment

And I guess I’ll have more of those for a while because of the makeup lessons.

So. Lights out at midnight but I still got up around 7 and did the complete morning routine. It feels like those 10 minutes of yoga and the journaling makes a huge difference. My feet didn’t hurt quite as much, by the way. Maybe the new exercises make a difference. Or maybe the difference is that I didn’t do the new exercises the day before. I guess I’ll figure it out eventually.

Speaking of feet I have started to stick my orthotics into my barefoot shoes again. Those are the shoes they were made for and I wasn’t sure all the cushioning is doing me any good. I’ll continue experimenting.

I knitted while my husband had breakfast and we talked about some health stuff of his and then about the early Rolling Stones and their equipment. He is reading a book about it and is totally fascinated.

I didn’t have to go out for once so I sat a little longer knitting. The knitting takes much longer than I like. Doing twisted purls and cables in cotton on 2 mm (size 0) needles requires some patience.

I was pretty late with the dishes. But before that I finally answered an email, paid the window bill and asked the piano tuner for an appointment. As usual I sent him an email which was answered by a call to our answering machine. When I tried calling back I had his answering machine on the line. But. I’m making progress, I left my cell phone number which meant I could talk to an actual person the next time they called. He – or rather his son – will come over in two weeks, tune the piano and do some other maintenance. Which will take about four hours so that will be pricey, for sure.

Meanwhile my husband’s computer was supposed to be delivered but they rang my mother-in-laws doorbell and she didn’t know anything about it. But I had written the security code down on a piece of paper, could confirm that the huge box was indeed for us and everything was fine.

I unpacked the computer and started the set up, then we found that we didn’t have enough parmesan, so I walked to the nearest supermarket to get some. And chocolate.

Lunch was very good:

a plate of girandole in tomato sauce with zucchini and grated parmesan with a glass of water on the side

The boy even ate with us. After we got talking about why he still hasn’t chosen a new phone. We sat down and quickly decided on one after realizing that he really doesn’t care. I clicked „order“, then went to google and looked the model up only to find the headline „why the S21 was a flop“. Well. Too big, too heavy and no SD card slot. So we canceled the order.

Over that I had almost forgotten the time and had to take a super quick shower before my first student. Teaching was fun but a little exhausting and at the end I met another potential new student. Really interesting adult learner who will start next week.

After that I saw that my husband was doing the dishes, I ate dinner while he was busy and we talked. I did my foot exercises, Duolingo and watched something while knitting some more.

Oh, and very good news, I finally got an answer from the clinic to my email about the bulge in my neck. Well, nothing to worry about, just wait and see, healing takes about three months and I still have two to go.

Today will be pretty full as well but then I wouldn’t want to be bored so I’m fine with it.

Another long Tuesday

June 5, 2024 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I went to bed just on time the night before, woke up on time as well and did my complete morning routine. I deserve a gold star. There was breakfast, a conversation with my husband, dishes, the folding of laundry, the walk to two different health food stores and lunch half an hour late:

bratwurst, mashed potatoes and green beans with a glass of water

Then I taught all the students all afternoon until after dinnertime. Ate dinner, procrastinated like crazy, and sat there scrolling though Instagram for too long.

Then I started writing this post, did a quick Duolingo session, washed all the dishes and watched some C-drama while knitting. I also tried looking into titles of Urban Fantasy novels but had a hard time figuring out how. I did, however, unearth the K-lytics report from last year and looked at a couple of trends. As I thought, the stuff I’m writing is not on trend. No surprise there. I will continue anyway.

Today will be another long day but at least I will have a bit more time in the morning.

Big knitting mistake, casting on and grilled cheese

June 4, 2024 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I woke up early but at least I had gone to bed on time. I went to bed while the boy was doing the dishes, win! And it turns out him clanging pots and pans doesn’t bother me at all when I fall asleep. Now, in the morning, about an hour before I wake up, well, that’s a different story. Tiptoe past my room and – bam! – I’m awake.

I had set my alarm a little earlier so I could check on the boy who had plans to go to uni after a night without sleep. He was still awake when I checked but turned out he was way too tired to go anywhere or pay attention. Then I picked up my phone and had to skip the morning routine because I ran out of time. Sigh.

My husband came for breakfast and started the wood stove again, it was still very, very cold so I was grateful for that. While he was waiting for the water to boil I finally finished Clue 1 of the mystery knit-a-long. I counted the stitches to see if everything was alright and – the stitch count was off.

Long story short, I had made a mistake in row 63 of 220, had made a 2-row stripe instead of a 6-row stripe, and so I had a problem. I was very proud of myself for not immediately ripping the whole thing back. Instead I took a picture, posted it in the MKAL spoiler thread and asked for advice. Because there are knitters in the group who have test-knit the whole pattern they could tell me what to do. And they did. The best solution is to just knit on for a few more rows, apparently the stripe color doesn’t matter all that much.

Now I have to decide how much it bugs me. Especially since I also botched the edge stitches. Sorry, that I can’t post a picture but – spoilers. I did cast on for my third Lauriel sweater, though. Nothing much to see there so far, I only got five rows in. And had to start the whole thing over twice because counting stitches and setting up an unusual ribbing pattern doesn’t really mesh with re-hashing the argument you had with your husband two days ago. At length. I think we reached a new understanding, though, so at least it was worth it.

All that knitting and counting took quite some time so I posted that sad excuse for a daily post and then started researching videos that teach how to fix your sleep schedule.

And then – another proud moment – I pulled the laptop out, sat down at my new writing desk and fixed the formatting problem on the novel so that I can give my husband an ebook copy. Yeah!

Lunch was leftovers, bifteki and bulgur in tomato sauce. Some veggies would have been nice but my husband spent the morning finally making the recordings he had wanted to do on the weekend and that was more important. He had spent two days trying to get the recording software to record more than one track at a time and failed. The night before I had tried helping him and though he told me to just leave it alone after a while my brain wouldn’t let it go. At least it’s fixed now. We have had that exact same problem before and even remembered the solution but not where to click to get to it. Very frustrating.

Anyways, obligatory lunch pic:

white plate on a brown table holding a bit of bifteki, bulgur, tomato sauce and grated parmesan and a glass of water on the side

I took a shower right after lunch because I was seeing a potential new student first thing and wanted my hair to be as dry as possible. Which turned out to be not very dry. The student is the sister of another one of my students. She is really nice and will start next week.

Then there was all the teaching. It was fun after two weeks off. And I also started scheduling the first two make-up lessons for the week I was in the hospital.

Determined to not slump down after work as usual and also remembering my do-something-different challenge I made myself my very first ever grilled cheese sandwich:

a brown table with a beige hand-thrown plat holding a grilled cheese sandwich. Next to it a hand-thrown beige ceramic mug with tea.

The boy has been making himself pan-fried grilled cheese a lot lately and since I’m a bit tired of eating the same exact thing for dinner every day and since I am not a big fan of white bread when it’s not toasted I gave it a try. It might not look much but it was excellent.

Then I played my silly games for a bit, started writing this post, skipped the dishes, did Duolingo, watched an episode of „Handsome Siblings“ while working on the cardigan, did some quick yoga and went to bed.

Today will be another busy one but then Tuesdays always are.

And time got away from me again both last night and this morning, so – June Goals!

June 3, 2024 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I had a really hard time pinning my goals down this month. On the one hand nothing has changed from the months before, on the other hand I’m hoping to write them down in a way that makes me less overwhelmed. Here we go:

  1. Rebuilding healthy habits – I have a habit tracker, I will use it and when I don’t do something I will write down why.
  2. Publishing – break down publishing the book into manageable steps and do one of them every day
  3. Knitting/Sewing/Spinning/Reading/Listening – keep up with MKAL, knit brown Lauriel cardigan, finish sewing brown corduroy skirt, participate in Tour de Fleece again, read at least 8 books, keep up with “Year of Wonder“
  4. Learning – continue with Chinese and maybe Italian, finish Bullet Journal course and watch some of the other classes I own
  5. House – tidy, clean or declutter something every day and get the ball rolling on repairs and maintenance

I reserve the right to tweak and change any and all of these goals as needed. We’ll see how that goes.

Did all the Friday things a day late but not much more

June 2, 2024 by Susanne Leave a Comment

This feels like one of those days where I only got half of what I wanted done. But then, maybe, what I wanted was a little too much.

I was pretty happy that I went to bed on time the night before and woke up refreshed after a little more than eight hours of sleep. The boy showed up while I was still in bed doing my morning stretches for plantar fasciitis before actually getting up. We talked, which was nice, for half an hour. Oops.

When I started my morning pages my husband showed up. He wanted to build a fire because it was so cold and rainy. I am very proud that I still wrote morning pages and then took my yoga mat and did yoga in my studio. I was very determined to start the month on the right foot.

There was breakfast and all kinds of online stuff and then I changed the sheets on my bed, including taking the wedge topper off that I had bought to prevent reflux. Since I don’t have reflux I don’t really need it. I started my weekly cleaning routine and this time took care to change things around so I wouldn’t have to cross the hallway all the time. When my husband cooks he keeps going back and forth between the annex and the old part of the house (yeah, I don’t get it either) and gets annoyed every time we cross paths. So instead of taking the duster and dusting all the rooms, like I normally do, I just did the annex. And then I hung up the load of laundry my husband had started earlier.

Lunch was delicious Greek food:

a plate with baked potatoes, kohlrabi, bifteki and tsatsiki with a glass of water on the side

Late morning I had also gotten my shipment of cotton yarn for the new cardigan I desperately need. You know how it is. The color his not the most exciting but it will fit most things I wear and hopefully also me. My other brown sweater that can be worn with skirts is way too small at this point. Here is a boring picture of the yarn:

a ball of dark brown cotton on a gray iPad case on a dark brown wooden table

Somehow I couldn’t get a good picture of the dark brown yarn on the dark brown table. No idea why. I spent some time in the morning figuring out which size I want to knit and gathering materials. I have so many knitting projects on the go that I’m running out of project bags and I might have to buy myself another 2 mm circular needles because I have two projects where I need those. I think I’ll transfer the mystery shawl that is getting bigger and bigger to a longer needle and put the cardigan on the shorter one.

I’m almost finished with clue one of the mystery shawl and there are ten more days until the second one. The last time I made this cardigan it only took me a week. But then there were two 8-hour train rides in there.

I took a break after lunch that was too long and then finally got going with cleaning the old part of the house. And did the lunch dishes.

When it was time for dinner I still wanted to take a shower, look at checklists for self-publishing, set up my bullet journal for June and set my goals for the month.

I made myself dinner:

a ceramic plate with two slices of bread with butter and chives, a kindle, a ceramic mug and some brie on a piece of paper

My husband had brought way more chives in before lunch than anybody needed so I decided to make myself a chives sandwich. Unfortunately, that is the wrong kind of bread.

Then I decided to start writing this post before finally taking my shower and then giving up on getting anything else done for the day. Just as I started writing the boy came downstairs and started talking at me. (So you know whom to blame if this is completely incoherent.)

So I moved the rest of my to-dos to today and focused on going to bed at a reasonable time.

Another very tired day, going out for lunch and a nice evening

June 1, 2024 by Susanne Leave a Comment

So after only 5 1/2 hours of sleep I got up, decided to do yoga first because I was late again, managed that and meditation and had breakfast.

Since I’m writing this the day after I don’t really remember what I did in the morning, though, wait – I did look up lists for selfpublishing. I have an astounding amount of resources (shocking, I know), found this one list I thought was perfect until I actually looked at it, looked at a course I have about publishing (nah, not it) and did some thinking in circles. I did the dishes and thought about a new computer for my husband (I want him to use my old laptop and an external monitor but he is very reluctant), did some other stuff (including blogging) and barely managed to be ready in time to go out with my husband for lunch. We went to the Greek restaurant he used to visit every week with a friend. It’s a very short walk from our house. I did the usual “all meat because it’s Greek food“-thing:

restaurant table set for two people, the plate in front has souvlaki, gyros, tomato rice, tsatsiki and salad, the one in the back has a lamb shank with the same rice and salad. There is a plate with some pita bread, a glass of red wine and a beer.

Not pictured is the ouzo we started out with. And then we even got dessert:

Same restaurant table with glaktoburiko, vanilla ice cream and shipped cream all sprinkled with cinnamon. There is a red LED candle next to the plate.

It was very yummy. Afterwards we went to the supermarket right across the street because it turned out we didn’t have enough cheese, licorice, disposable gloves, cucumber and cheap salt.

Over lunch I tried talking with my husband about the knot of problems that is publishing the book but that didn’t go all that well. He mostly just senses my tension and dread and doesn’t have the headspace for details so it stresses him out.

After that I was very set on getting stuff done but I took a social media/silly games break first. I barely managed to hang the load of laundry up that my husband had started earlier. Over lunch we had also talked about his need for a new computer. I’m not sure but the one he is currently using might be 14 years old at this point. It is still working but that’s all you can say for it. He really dislikes the thought if a laptop even with it set up permanently. I have been budgeting for a new computer anyway, so we decided to just pull the trigger.

So in the afternoon I looked at all the iMac models, chose one, got his okay and ordered it. I guess I’ll spend two to three days next week setting that up.

After that there wasn’t much time left before my monthly group coaching call. I ate a quick dinner before, made myself some tea and had to rush to be two minutes late. Coaching was very nice. And helpful.

The boy and I had agreed to watch something that evening but he had forgotten. When I came back to the kitchen half an hour later than I had thought I would he was just making himself dinner. We ended up watching an episode of „The Dead Boy Detectives“. I really liked that one (episode 4). It always feels a bit weird to just watch an episode here and there. I would like it better if we went back to watching three or four episodes per week but then I am very happy that my grown son still wants to do things with his mother.

Speaking of which I now know more about painting Warhammer figurines than I ever would have wanted to know. I also got another explanation of Eigenvalue but have to confess that I’m the one whose eyes glaze over when someone pulls out algebra, vectors and matrices.

I was sensible for once and did not have another beer in the evening or watch an episode of C-drama but instead turned the lights out at 10.30.

Which means I’m writing this on Saturday morning which means I’m again woefully behind on the day. But whatever. I got enough sleep, that’s the most important thing. Onwards!
