Some great cooking, some brain fog and some rest

March 24, 2024 by Susanne Leave a Comment

I had gone to bed too late again. Woke up from the alarm and was very determined to do my actual morning routine despite feeling as if half my brain was still comatose.

The boy showed up as I was about to start writing morning pages. He has a sore throat and wanted to get the thermometer. Since someone asked why he is bothering me all the time while I’m doing my morning routine, well, he is actually waiting to get something to eat until I’m awake. I’m usually sleeping very deeply all through the night until about 5 am when the softest sound will make me wake up and unable to fall back asleep. So if he is awake and hungry at that time he will wait until I’m up. Also, I like seeing him and talking to him. The only downside is that my time is so limited, I need to be done with my morning routine around 8.40 when my husband shows up for breakfast. Who waits as well because of my morning routine, even when he is awake before then.

I had a morning where everything took a long time and my brain was foggy but things went okay. My husband then told me that he wanted to make lasagna because there was still a tiny bit of ragù bolognese left. Sure. I quietly rearranged my whole day in my head and offered to get more lasagna noodles. Also, as it turned out, we didn’t have milk and he wanted eggplant, papaya and mozzarella. And no, the papaya was not for the lasagna.

The daily piece of classical music was „Heal Me” by a contemporary composer named Anna Meredith and I really like it, so I went to see what else she has done. She is currently doing electronica and I listened to her channel all the way through doing the dishes.

All through the brain fog I had been thinking about my upcoming trip and packing. I had originally planned to take just the small daypack and my purse but was waffling on what to take. Do I take sweatpants because I’ll be sitting around in my mother’s living room most of the time? Do I take the slippers with the orthotic insoles? Makeup because we’ll be celebrating my aunt’s birthday? I had been thinking about making a list many times over the past two weeks or so but always thought it was unnecessary. I still have the list from last year and I could probably pack the bag in my sleep. Right?

In the end I decided to make a list after all. And all of a sudden the brain fog cleared and I felt so much better, it was uncanny. Looking at the list I’d say the daypack will be a little too small. I do want to bring my purse, though, and I also want a bigger bag for the stuff I need while on the train. I don’t like having the big backpack at my feet and I also dislike getting things down from the overhead rack. So I guess I’ll probably take the purse, the bigger backpack (carry-on size) and then a messenger bag that I can put inside the backpack. Problem solved. I’ll have three bags but only two to wrangle for getting on and off the train.

I would never have thought that not having the list would stress me out that much. Wow.

Then the supermarket and I only bought a little bit of chocolate. Came back home, chopped everything for the salad while my husband was cooking the sauces, then assembled the lasagnas and then had to wait until after 2 for lunch to be ready. But it was totally worth it:

a plate of lasagna, a bowl of salad and half a glass of water

And there was enough leftover to eat it again today or tomorrow. I found the one of the chocolate bars I bought was „best before“ a month ago:

a corner of an iPad with Merge Mansion and the underside of a Kinder bar showing a best before date of February 2024

This one tasted fine, though, the other one that should have been good until the end of the year, though, had that gray color that comes from the chocolate getting close to melting and tasted a little less creamy.

It was 3 o’clock at that point. My husband had mentioned that he had missed watching ski jumping because it had been at 9 in the morning. I went into problem solving mode and said we could subscribe to the Eurosport channel for the month so he could stream it whenever he wanted. Well, turned out things have changed since I last subscribed and I needed to download a different app and make an account and such.

That and playing silly games on my iPad and scrolling through social media made the rest of the afternoon go by rather quickly. I took a shower, went online again, started writing this post, did Duolingo and watched some C-drama and that was it.

I guess I’ll tackle the to-do list today.
